The catalan fruit and vegetable sector
Production
Fresh fruit is one of Catalonia's main agricultural products in terms of economic importance, area and relative importance in the production of both Europe and Spain, as well as for exportation.
Catalonia has the largest production area of sweet fruit in Spain, and is ninth-biggest in the world for peach and nectarine, eighteenth for pear, and thirty-seventh for apple.
From over 55 thousand hectares of fruit land, about 1 million tonnes are produced annually, primarily apple, pear, peach and nectarine.
Thanks to its rich diversity and the mild Mediterranean climate, Catalonia offers a wide variety of fruit, most of which is farmed using the integrated production system.
Exports
Catalonia exports 65% of sweet fruit and citrus fruits (609,268 tonnes) (of total production of 940,501 tonnes) to foreign markets and operates on most demanding European and international chains in terms of quality, traceability and food safety. Germany, France, Italy, the UK and the Netherlands are among the main destination countries.
