The organic sector
The significant growth in the productive sector in recent years has created the conditions for the processing industry to increase and consolidate, adding to the value of products that are already value-added due to their production characteristics. Lleida has the largest area of organic farming while Barcelona is the province with the most processing industries.
Organic farming is a system of production and processing food to obtain the highest quality, respecting the environment and without using synthetic chemicals (hormones, herbicides, chemical fertilisers, pesticides and others).
The organic food production sector exports large quantities, especially to highly demanding markets concerned with issues related to the environment, health and food safety.
Catalan businesses stand out for their innovative capacity and commercial dynamism, allowing them to market much of their production on foreign markets, primarily in Europe.
